EFGA Students Communicate with Students in Malawi

Students from Estrella Foothills Global Academy have found pen pals in the African country of Malawi.

Kim Rillero, program director of Urban Farming Education, developed a relationship with the school during a recent partnership summit. Rillero discussed her travels to Malawi and the Likuni Boys Secondary School with school administration.

Soon, a pen pal and virtual student exchange experience was formed. Rillero presented information to EFGA students about life in Malawi and what school is like for the students who live there.

Students in 7th and 8th grade began sending letters to the students who wrote back in return.

This has been an amazing global experience for EFGA students and the school hopes to continue this exchange of letters and hopefully set up a virtual meeting as well.

EFGA Middle School Students Complete IB Writing Requirement

Estrella Foothills Global Academy students in Grades 6-8 are all part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Estrella Foothills received full authorization of becoming an IB school this past November. Students who are part of the Middle Years Programme strive to develop active learning skills that are internationally minded by empathizing with others. Students also develop critical thinking skills through inquiry-based learning activities within the classroom. Three of our IB students have gone above and beyond demonstrating IB learner attributes.

Kayleigh Mauk- 8th grade- She has been accepted into the IB program at North High School next year. She demonstrates attributes of not only being knowledgeable but principled in all that she does in and out of the classroom.

Amari McCullum, Robert Wells- 7th grade- Demonstrated being inquirers and communicators in their IB summative writing assignment in English Language Arts. Students were asked to research and evaluate the Victorian Era and Industrial Revolution to make connections and explain the author’s purpose in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” IB students in their junior year of high school are required to write a 2,000 word essay. These two students doubled that by writing over 4,000 words! Some EFGA middle school students have already completed the IB requirement to write 2,000 word essays. A few have even accomplished the 3,000 word essay, which is a senior high school IB requirement.
